How to turn on preset mode for the Hakko FX-888D soldering station

The Hakko FX-888D soldering station is a terrific, high-quality, low-cost soldering station. It has a preset mode that allows up to five preset temperature settings to be stored and easily switched between. However, the preset mode is disabled by default. Here’s how to enable it.

  1. Begin with the base station turned off.
  2. Hold down the UP button while switching on the base station. This will put the unit into parameter setting mode.
  3. Press the UP button until the number 11 is shown on the display. If you miss it, you can keep pressing UP until it cycles back around.
  4. Press ENTER.
  5. The display now shows either 0 or 1. If 1, it’s already in preset mode and we don’t need to do anything else. You can switch off the unit and when you turn it back on it will be in preset mode.
  6. If the display shows 0, the unit is in normal mode. Press UP to change it to 1.
  7. Press ENTER.
  8. Now, you must choose the number of presets to enable. You can choose 2-5. Press UP until the desired number of presets is shown on the display.
  9. Press ENTER.
  10. The display should now show the number 11 again. To save the new settings, hold down ENTER until the letter “y” is shown. (If at this point you decide you don’t want to save the settings, you can press UP to change the “y” to “n” and press ENTER. It will return to the parameter setting mode.) If you do want to save the settings, press ENTER while “y” is shown and the unit will enter normal operation with the new settings saved.

There are other parameters that can be set besides the mode selection:

  1. Thankyou so much for this information!! I love my Hakko FX-888D but was getting really frustrated that the manual and the device didn’t operate the same way. Now I have enabled preset mode and can actually use presets as per the manual.
